Our Beloved Friend Burt

BURT BARROWS was born in 1917 in Ogden, Utah. Burt majored in English Literature at Berkeley. During that time, as East Bay reporter for the San Francisco Examiner, he interviewed Somerset Maugham, Aldous Huxley, and Alexander Kerensky, among others. He left university to join the Coast Guard in 1941, just before the attack on Pearl Harbour. He was commissioned with the Coast Guard and saw service at Leyte, Mindoro, Saipan and Iwo Jima. He left the Service in 1946 to return to Berkeley, graduating in 1949 with a B.Sc. in mechanical engineering.

Upon graduation he went to work for the university and stayed with them for ten years. In 1951, with four others, Burt was sent to Livermore to look at an abandoned Naval Flight Training Station and to make recommendations as to its suitability for use as a nuclear research laboratory. The next eight years were spent there, or in Nevada or in the Pacific, testing various nuclear devices.

He later spent four years with IBM and two years with Control Data in magnetic disk development, eight years with Quaker Oats Chemicals in chemical process equipment design, and a subsequent twenty years as design consultant to various chemical companies (du Pont, Eastman, Texaco Chemicals, and others).

Burt retired in '95 at age 78 and set out upon a voyage of discovery, moving from Florida to California with his beloved wife, Jeanette, and the furkids.

From 1998 to 2001, Burt wrote for and provided a much-needed literary flavor to an online Chow magazine, The Living Chow Chow. Many of us first came to know his fictional town of Riverdale with its cast of very interesting characters through his monthly stories for TLCC...and if there were any dogs involved, they were usually Chows!

In early 2004, Burt developed the Furry Friends website, occasionally featuring his own stories but more often than not showcasing animal stories from around the world.

Burt enjoyed his retirement and spent time with his devoted wife, Jeannette and family in Sonora, California. He also spent quite a bit of time on the computer with his cyber-family, and I am proud to include myself in that number. Sadly Burt passed away on July 16, 2006. He will be forever missed.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond's glare on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die.

HomeWelcome to the world of Furry Friends, a wondrous world, full of delight for those who see and appreciate the superb qualities of our furred and feathered friends. Over the years we have heard, read, even written a few stories about these delightful creatures. Some are happy stories, bringing joy in the reading, some are sad, tug at our heart strings and bring tears to our eyes, some are funny and make us laugh. Each one gives us further insight into that wonderful world of animals.

This is a collection of stories gathered from many sources, some from the Internet, some from tales told by friends, some have been published, some are folklore, many are by writers unknown. We plan to publish one story each week and will, eventually incorporate them into a book. We have tried to give credit where credit is due. Wherever the author is known, we have asked for and received permission to publish. Where the author is unknown and someone recognizes the work, we will be happy to see that appropriate credits are given.

This site is intended for people who know and understand animals, who consider all animals as intelligent, sentient beings, who consider their pets members of the family and, most of all, for those who care what happens to any animal wherever and whatever that animal may be.

If you consider animals as God's creatures whose care and well-being are a sacred trust, you will enjoy visiting our site. If animals are only animals to you, to be taken in or discarded at will, these stories may give you valuable insights, but we doubt it.

We invite you to read and critique these stories, contribute your own or send in stories you have read or heard and think the Furry Friends family would enjoy. All communications will be answered, but we ask you to be patient if it takes us a while to get back to you.
